What to remember

  • Man defense guards players within team rules.
  • Zone defense guards areas and threats.
  • Neither system removes help responsibilities.
  • Every defense must finish with a rebound.

01

How man-to-man works

Each defender begins with an assigned opponent, stays between that player and the basket, and adjusts position according to the ball. Off-ball defenders help while seeing both player and ball.

Switching, helping, and recovering can change the matchup during a possession. Man defense is not five separate one-on-one games.

02

How zone works

Defenders begin in assigned areas, such as a 2-3 or 3-2 alignment, and respond when the ball and offensive players enter those spaces. Communication is necessary when cutters pass between areas.

A zone shifts as the ball moves. Standing on a spot without guarding a nearby threat leaves passing and rebounding gaps.

03

What both defenses share

  1. Protect the basket and paint.
  2. Pressure the ball without giving up an easy drive.
  3. See cutters and communicate screens.
  4. Help a teammate, then recover or rotate.
  5. Find an opponent and rebound when the shot goes up.

04

How offenses attack each one

Against man defense, offenses use cuts, screens, spacing, and individual advantages. Against zone, offenses move the ball, occupy gaps, flash into open areas, and create overloads.

Beginners should learn the team's first rule rather than memorizing every possible coverage. Ask where to be when the ball is at the top, wing, corner, and post.

Avoid these

Common beginner mistakes

  • Watching only the assigned player in man defense.
  • Guarding empty floor in a zone.
  • Failing to communicate cutters.
  • Assuming zone defense requires less movement.
  • Forgetting box-outs after the shot.

Try this next

Shell walk-through

15 minutes
  1. Place four offensive players around the perimeter.
  2. Move the ball slowly without attacking.
  3. Defenders call ball, help, and cutter positions.
  4. Repeat once in man principles and once in zone areas.
  5. Finish every rep with a box-out call.

Score it: Complete five passes with all defenders moving and communicating correctly.

Beginner questions

Which defense is easier for beginners?

Either can be taught simply, but each has different learning demands. The best choice depends on age, goals, team rules, and coaching approach.

Does zone defense mean I stay in one spot?

No. You protect an area while moving with the ball and nearby threats, communicating exchanges, and rebounding.
