What to remember

  • The ball should cross low and close.
  • Body and pace make the move believable.
  • Exit immediately after the change.
  • Learn both directions.

01

Build the stationary crossover

  1. Use an athletic stance with the feet wider than hips.
  2. Push the ball from outside one knee to outside the other.
  3. Receive it with relaxed fingers instead of reaching with the palm.
  4. Keep the bounce below the knees and the chest organized.
  5. Complete clean repetitions before adding speed.

02

Add footwork and an exit

Take a small setup step toward one side, lower your hips, cross the ball, and push off to the other direction. The first exit dribble should move into open space, not back toward the defender.

Avoid stepping across your own feet. Keep the base wide enough to change direction without losing balance.

03

Create a real change of pace

A crossover works because the defender reacts to the approach. Arrive at a controlled pace, pause or lean slightly, then change the ball and accelerate.

If every dribble happens at one speed, the direction change becomes easy to predict. Practice slow-fast and fast-slow-fast rhythms.

04

Progress from cone to defender

  1. Cross at a stationary line.
  2. Walk toward a marker and cross.
  3. Jog toward the marker and exit for two dribbles.
  4. React to a partner pointing left or right.
  5. Use the move in one-on-one with a three-dribble limit.

Avoid these

Common beginner mistakes

  • Bouncing the ball high or far in front.
  • Looking down before the move.
  • Changing hands without changing pace.
  • Crossing directly into a defender's reach.
  • Practicing only the favorite direction.

Try this next

Crossover exit ladder

10 minutes
  1. 30 stationary crossovers.
  2. 10 walking crossovers each direction.
  3. 10 marker crossovers each direction.
  4. 10 partner-signal decisions.
  5. Finish with three short one-on-one rounds.

Score it: Count clean moves that include two controlled exit dribbles.

Beginner questions

How low should a crossover be?

Usually below the knees near pressure, but the exact height depends on your body and the space. It should stay outside the defender's easiest reach.

Is a crossover a carry?

It becomes illegal if the hand gets under the ball and the dribble comes to rest before continuing. Keep the hand generally on top or the side and maintain a continuous dribble.
