What to remember

  • Size 5 is commonly 27.5 inches.
  • Size 6 is commonly 28.5 inches.
  • Size 7 is commonly 29.5 inches.
  • Your league's current requirement is the final answer.

01

Recommended youth sizes

USA Basketball's youth guidelines recommend size 5 for boys and girls ages 7-8 and size 6 for boys and girls ages 9-11. For ages 12-14 and grades 9-12, the guidelines list size 6 for girls and size 7 for boys.

These recommendations match the goal of using equipment that fits developing hands and skill. A ball that is too large or heavy can make control harder and encourage a young player to change shooting motion simply to reach the basket.

02

What size 5, 6, and 7 mean

  1. Size 5: about 27.5 inches around; often called a youth ball.
  2. Size 6: about 28.5 inches around; used in many girls', women's, and youth settings.
  3. Size 7: about 29.5 inches around; used in many boys' and men's settings.
  4. Mini balls below size 5 are useful for play but may not match organized competition equipment.

03

Age is a guide; league rules decide

A local school, recreation program, tournament, or national federation may use different age bands or equipment rules. Read the current registration information or ask the organizer before buying a game ball.

If you are an adult beginning recreationally, use the size your games use. Training with the same size supports consistent dribbling, passing, and shooting, although a smaller ball can be used temporarily for some control drills.

04

Choose the cover and pressure too

Size is only one decision. Rubber and durable outdoor composites handle rough courts better. Leather or indoor composites are intended for finished gym floors. Choose a ball that feels secure rather than slick on the surface where you actually play.

Inflate within the manufacturer's printed range and your competition rules. Too little air changes the bounce; too much can make the ball harsh and difficult to control. Use a pump gauge instead of guessing whenever possible.

Avoid these

Common beginner mistakes

  • Buying by age without checking the league.
  • Confusing diameter with circumference.
  • Choosing an indoor-only cover for rough outdoor courts.
  • Overinflating for a faster bounce.
  • Making a young player shoot from adult distance with a large ball.

Try this next

Ball fit check

5 minutes
  1. Confirm the size printed on the ball.
  2. Check the league requirement.
  3. Dribble with each hand at walking pace.
  4. Make 10 chest passes and 10 close shots.
  5. Notice slipping, strain, or a bounce that feels inconsistent.

Score it: The right ball should support control without forcing a different motion.
